Sometimes we build a custom amp for an artist that is so good that we have to offer it to everyone. This is how the Stella became a Bad Cat standard. Touring guitarist James Duke wanted a simple single channel preamp based on the EF86 side of the Black Cat. We combined this pentode top boost circuit with a pair of EL34s running in class A at 40 watts for maximum headroom.
The control panel consist of the classic Bad Cat preamp: volume, five-way selector, bass, treble, cut and a master volume that can be switched out of the circuit. The Stella offers a EF86 front end known for producing a complex vocal quality with glassy chime. Combine this with the full force of two EL34s running in class A and you have an ultra-pure single channel amp capable of going from sweet ringing chime to full harmonic saturation with a simple change in picking dynamics.
